10 Proven Ways to Boost Coaching Confidence
How to Build Confidence as a New Coach
If you’re a new or aspiring coach, you might be thinking: “I’m not ready to charge yet.” or “What if I get stuck in a session? I don’t know enough to help someone.”
If that’s you, you’re not alone. Every coach I’ve trained has felt that way at some point. Today, I want to help you shift that, because confidence doesn’t come before coaching.
It comes through coaching.
By the end of this episode, you’ll know how to start showing up with presence, competence, and calm, even when you’re just starting out.
What Confidence Really Is
Confidence isn’t the absence of nerves. It’s the trust that you can handle whatever happens in the room. And that trust grows from skills you’ve practised, refined, and embodied.
Think about a skill that once felt awkward but now feels second nature, like driving a car, hosting a Zoom session, or speaking to a group. At first, you were hesitant, but with practice, feedback, and patience, you grew confident.
Coaching works the same way. You don’t need to be perfect to begin. You simply need to start, keep learning, and practise consistently.
Your Role as a Coach
One of the biggest mindset shifts is realising that you’re not the expert on your client; they are. Your role is to create a safe, structured space where their wisdom and agency can surface. You’re there to elicit insights, ask powerful questions, and help them move forward.
And this is where structured models become invaluable. Frameworks like the GROW Model, the CLEAR Model, or our own Mindset Coaching Model give you direction and help your client feel safe and supported.
With these, you’re never lost. You can relax, listen intently, and let your curiosity guide the conversation.
Practising in Safe Spaces
Confidence builds fastest when you practise in supportive environments. That’s why inside our coaching community, the Coach’s Success Studio, we run peer practice sessions where you coach, get coached, and receive feedback, all without pressure.
Experiencing both sides of the process not only deepens your skills but also reassures you that the tools and frameworks work.
Rewiring Your Self-Talk
As a coach, you help clients shift their thinking—so model it yourself. Before a session, swap thoughts like “What if I don’t know what to say?” for:
- “I’m here to listen deeply and trust the process.”
- “I don’t need all the answers; I’m here to partner, not prescribe.”
This reframing reduces anxiety and allows you to show up with presence.
Grounding Before and Reflecting After Sessions
Before a session:
Set an intention like “I will serve the client’s agenda with curiosity and respect.”
Ground yourself with three slow breaths, feet on the floor, and visualise the calm, focused space you want to hold.
After a session:
Reflect briefly: What went well? Where was I most present? What could I do differently? What insight did I gain about myself as a coach?
These simple habits accelerate growth and build lasting confidence.
Facing Imposter Syndrome
Nearly every coach wrestles with imposter syndrome. That inner voice says: “Who am I to do this?”
Remember, you’re not there to out-expert your client. You’re there to hold the process. Results will always be the best antidote to self-doubt.
